Overtone Singing
In this blog we will explore the world of overtone or throat singing. This seemingly magical style of singing allows the singer to produce two or even three notes at the same time! This amazing phenomenon utilizes the overtone series (ask a brass player) to create these cool sounds.
The Mongolians are usually credited with championing this style of singing, but it can be heard around the world from Tibetan Buddhist monks to Scandinavian folk songs. By manipulating the vocal folds and channeling the air through cavities in the mouth, larynx, and pharynx, an overtone may be produced. It's a very tricky technique that certainly takes some time to master. Check it out and try it for yourself!
