Preparing for Your Recital

As recital dates approach, we have compiled one last list of helpful tips for a successful performance.

1. Know your piece: As simple or obvious as this may sound, some students may be unprepared. Practicing a piece and getting it to sound good takes time, don't convince yourself that you can learn it in a week or two! Allow yourself the time to make your piece shine.

2. Record yourself: This is an often underestimated tool. Recording yourself gives yourself a new perspective and is often an eye-opener. Sit down with your music and pick out specific mistakes that you couldn't hear otherwise.

3. Perform in front of people: The best way to practice performing is to…perform! Start with people you're comfortable with, such as family and close friends. If you have time, do a mini-recital and invite people to hear you, this way you get used to the performing process and get less nervous.

4. Memorize your music: Not all performances need to be memorized, but in doing this, you will know your music better and will be able to connect emotionally to it even more!

5. Just "do": Often when we're performing on stage there can be a voice in our head saying "Don't mess up!" "Look out for that tough spot!" Too much analyzing while you're performing can lead to you messing up in places you normally wouldn't. Remember to have fun and to enjoy the music you're about to perform!
