Taking Care of Your Instrument

With the brutal winter weather well upon us, it is important to take care of your instrument. Your instrument is an investment that is both worth money and perhaps sentimental value. Here are some tips and reminders to keep your instrument happy and healthy!

1. Humidity: Too much or too little humidity can cause your instrument to swell or become brittle (especially if it's wood). Most instruments like to be stored in a climate of 45% to 55% humidity. Use a humidifier or dehumidifier depending on your situation to help. Many instruments have individual humidifier systems that can be put into the instrument case, which brings us to...

2. Always keep your instrument in it's case when it's not in use - even if it's at home! The case offers added protection from the cold/heat, humidity and from a potentially nasty fall.

3. NEVER LEAVE YOUR INSTRUMENT IN THE CAR. This also goes for anywhere else that is below room temperature - even if it's in the case!

4. Keep your piano away from walls that face the outside of the house. This protects it from additional humidity issues.

5. If you sing, wear a scarf, dress warmly and don't yell! Also, drink lots of water to stay hydrated and to take care of illness.

Stay safe and stay warm!
