Whether about love, heartbreak, longing, or reconciliation...there are an estimated greater than 100 million recorded love songs throughout history! As this is clearly one of the most popular themes in music - across every genre imaginable - we wanted to take a quick dive into the popularity of the love song as an art form.

The oldest recorded love poem is the love song of Shu-Shin (c. 2000 BCE). Said to have been used in sacred fertility rites involving the king, the cuneiform tablet was discovered in the library of Ashurbanipal in Mesopotamia. Despite this, I’m hesitant to point to c. 2000 BCE as the starting point for love songs as we commonly know. There’s no telling what love songs have been lost to oral tradition, what love songs that those, who could not write, professed to their loved ones. After all, love is a feeling that transcends time.

However, regardless of the supposed start date, it is hard to argue that love songs have not held captive our hearts and minds for centuries. Between 1960 and 2010, 67.3 percent of lyrics from the American top-40 included references to relationships and love; 29.9 percent included references to desire.

As Valentine’s Day approaches, we wanted to share some classic love songs for your listening pleasure. (You might have heard this playlist at Massapequa Park’s Front Desk before).
