Exploring Artistry
It is often asked if artistry can be taught/learned as opposed to being an innate skill one is seemingly gifted with. Usually a question without answer, we will examine a few examples in an attempt to understand this mysterious side of performing.
Artistry is the ability to take good technique (execution of the notes) and create a meaningful interpretation formed through intellect and emotion. A consistent problem is when intellect and emotion are at an unbalanced ratio - essentially the crux of any teacher's problem when attempting to teach this concept. Intellect without emotion results in a performance that is seemingly lackluster and devoid of any passion. (Any young child that can read notes well is usually a textbook example of this.) Conversely, playing with solely emotion may result in a sloppy performance, or even worse, one that is unrepresentative of the composer's intentions. (This could be a person who is passionate about music but doesn't dedicate enough time to practicing properly.)
Ways to remedy these issues are usually as nebulous as the issue itself. For young students, exposure to talented artists may help. In addition, playing pieces that the student is ecstatic about may cultivate his/her passion for the music. Either way, creating a loving bond between music and student is paramount for these artistic abilities to shine through. For those that already have a fire burning in their hearts for music, a closer attention to the musical score may help. Pay attention to dynamics and articulation - take note that executing notes and rhythms correctly should not be an issue at this point! For older students, studying historical performance practices of their piece can help give new artistic ideas.
The answers to artistic problems are very vague because it is perhaps something to be experienced by the individual. Every experience is very personal and different, making this concept a solo journey for anyone learning, despite the fact that one may have a teacher to help guide them. From all genres of music great artists can be found but I leave you with two, jazz pianist Joey Alexander and classical pianist Evgeny Kissin. Both have been passionate artists from a young age - take a look and see if you can incorporate their artistic abilities into your playing!
